Visit a national park in your state or surrounding area.
Late summer and early fall are a great time for homeschoolers to travel. National parks are a fun, educational and economical way to enjoy history, science, and the great outdoors together as a family. With the public schools back in session, you will find the crowds down at your choice of destination. Check out http://www.nps.gov/findapark/index.htm for more information. Just click on the state you live in or want to visit and it provides all the information you need to visit the park you select including a brief history, hours of operations, designated fees, and reservations.

Make a Periodic Table Box.
Most kids love to collect things. Here is an idea that incorporates learning with that natural inclination. This is a creative hands-on project that will make studying the elements fun and easier to remember. A list of the elements that are the easiest to collect are provided. Choose nine or more of the suggestions at http://www.homeschooling-ideas.com/periodic-table-for-kids.html for a companion activity with Elements of Faith by Richard D. Duncan.
